Veterans Homeless Demonstration Project
The Salvation Army, Austin Area Command currently provides comprehensive homeless prevention services to eligible individual veterans and families in the Central Texas area adjacent to the Fort Hood military base. The Salvation Army coordinates services with the Central Texas Veterans Health Care System (CTVHCS) which serves 38 county areas with a focus on Bell, Coryell, McLennan, Williamson, and Travis Counties as the primary service area. Salvation Army case managers provide short and medium-term housing assistance while DOL Texas Veterans Commission staff link clients to employment and job training services and/or educational programs.
Direct financial assistance is provided for clients that are in need of assistance for rent, deposit, utilities, and other related housing needs. Additional assistance provides supportive services for families related to child care, housing placement, credit repair, transportation, and one-time car repairs. Regular home/office visits with the case manager are conducted to assess progress and provide continued services. This three year demonstration project can provide services to veterans and their families for up to eighteen months.
