Thank you for your interest in volunteering for The Salvation Army! The Austin area has over 6,000 non-profits and we are glad you chose us. Our dedicated team of Volunteers play a key role in The Salvation Army’s goal to provide support and the very best social service, to give aid wherever and whenever needed.
You must have an interest in giving back to the community, be willing and able to work as part of a great team of other volunteers and staff members. Your time and commitment are essential in the success of our organization. Most programs are designed to involve volunteers effectively to meet community needs.You must be 18yrs. or older to volunteer or complete community service hours. Please call United Way’s Information Hotline at 211 to get minors involved in volunteer opportunities in the Austin area.
Students needing to complete community service hours for a class, or court-ordered community service are not considered a volunteer. You can complete your hours any day of the week from 4:30am – 7:00pm at the downtown shelter. A background check is required. Please bring your paperwork, wear closed toed shoes and pants. No experience is necessary. Just call 512-476-1111 first to see if we need any help.

Step 1. Volunteers complete an application. Only one person must complete a group volunteer application for groups. Please submit the application to michelle_packer@uss.salvationarmy.org, fax it to 512-476-6840 or bring it to orientation.
Step 2. Attend an an hour long orientation that applies to your credit hours and is held at The Salvation Army located at 501 East Eighth Street, Austin, TX 78701. This is an opportunity to meet the Volunteer Coordinator, learn about The Salvation Army, process your volunteer application, take a tour, and get scheduled. An orientation is held every Tuesday and Thursday at 11:00am. Walk-ins are welcome.

Located downtown, please arrive early to find parking accommodations as we do not provide any. The entrance is in the ally between The Salvation Army and ARCH building’s off Red River Street. Go to the entrance found beneath The Salvation Army sign in the middle of alley, an intercom box is on the right wall. Press the button, inform the ground floor desk you are here for volunteer orientation, wait for the red light to turn green and enter. You can also call 512-476-1111 for further assistance.
